Designs from nature
Probably
the origin of the sources of inspiration is to be found in
Nature. A single flower, a bunch of flowers, a whole field with
butterflies
or
a riverbank with dragonflies gives inspiration to many drawings.
The distant blue shadows of mountains that I had earlier seen only in a
poem turned out to be reality as I travelled by train through old
Yugoslavia to Athens.
For
as long as I remember, Tammio Island and the sea have had an effect on
me. Tammio Island was the inspiration for the name of one of my
exhibitions. The ‘Winds of Tammio Island and Songs of
Glass’ exhibition included views representing boathouses on the
shore, seagulls and lampshades with rippling water effects.
I
doubt whether there exists an artist in any area of art that has not
been affected by Nature. My father knew certain birds, plants and
fish well.
I
have seen him create coloured oil pastel sketches and paintings from
nature. As a child, I began to observe Nature’s colours,
tones and differences between light and shade. I tried to see
which colours and intensity I should transfer into the scenes of a
drawing or a painting.

Scents
have also had their effect on me: Linnea Borealis in the forest, fresh
fish being smoked, the scent of sun on the skin and the scent of the
sea. It seems I can always hear seagulls scream as well as the
roar of a storm, the sound of rain or wind in the trees. I
recognise scenes in my work only when I return to some specific view.
